Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister Cities

A mural representing Kanazawa and Buffalo with the text "Buffalo and Kanazawa Sister Cities since 1962" in English and Japanese.
This mural was made to celebrate our 60th anniversary with Kanazawa and can be found on the Life Storage building at 290 Ellicott St., next to the Central Library.

Kanazawa is a city of 466,000 on the western coast of Japan, about 185 miles (300km) west of Tokyo. Buffalo became Kanazawa’s first sister city in 1962 and the cities regularly hold exchanges, including our participation in the annual Kanazawa Marathon, and Kanazawa’s creation and recent restoration of the Japanese garden in Deleware Park.

The Japanese Culture Center of WNY is an outgrowth of the original Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City Committee and we still maintain the sister city relationship between Buffalo and Kanazawa to this day. See below for some of the projects that have sprung from this relationship.
